Running efficient fulfillment operations isn’t just about moving inventory—it’s about having the right tools to manage complexity, solve problems quickly, and optimize operations at scale. This section covers the essential techniques and operational tools that give you precise control over your Jetpack fulfillment, from understanding how dimensional weight affects your shipping costs to coordinating freight shipments and managing orders in bulk.

Why These Tools Matter

Every fulfillment operation encounters challenges that require more than just the basic workflows. You need to:
  • Manage order timing when coordinating promotions or preparing for peak seasons
  • Handle orders in bulk when you’re dealing with hundreds of shipments that need the same change
  • Understand cost drivers like dimensional weight that impact your bottom line
  • Resolve operational issues like on-hold WROs or packaging errors
  • Coordinate complex logistics like freight shipments and custom branded packing materials
These aren’t edge cases—they’re everyday realities of running a fulfillment operation. The tools and techniques in this section help you handle these situations efficiently and accurately.

Understanding Shipping Costs

About Dimensional Weight

What it is: Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing method carriers use that considers both package weight and size. For bulky but lightweight items, DIM weight often determines your shipping cost instead of actual weight. Why it matters: If you’re shipping lightweight items in oversized boxes, you could be paying significantly more than necessary. Understanding DIM weight calculations helps you optimize packaging choices and predict shipping costs accurately. When to use it: Any time you’re estimating shipping costs, evaluating packaging options, or trying to understand why your fulfillment costs are higher than expected for lightweight products. Managing Orders in Bulk

When you need to perform the same action on multiple orders—whether that’s holding shipments for a promotion, canceling orders due to inventory issues, or updating product quantities across a batch—bulk operations save massive amounts of time.

Bulk Actions on Orders

What you can do:
  • Move multiple orders to On-Hold status at once
  • Release orders from hold in batches
  • Cancel multiple orders simultaneously
  • Clean sweep orders that need to be completely reset
  • Copy orders for reshipments or replacements
When to use it: Coordinating promotional timing, handling inventory shortages affecting multiple orders, managing seasonal holds, or cleaning up problematic order batches. View bulk actions guide →

Bulk Editing Orders

What you can do:
  • Add line items to multiple orders at once (promotional inserts, free gifts)
  • Remove line items from multiple orders (discontinued SKUs, out-of-stock products)
When to use it: Adding marketing materials to a batch of orders, removing out-of-stock SKUs while keeping the rest of the order intact, or making product changes across multiple shipments. View bulk editing guide →

Copy, Cancel, or Clean Sweep Orders

Three powerful actions for order management:
ActionWhat It DoesWhen to Use It
CopyDuplicates an order with a new order ID, preserving product details but resetting shipment informationReshipments, replacements, testing order configurations
CancelStops order fulfillment and marks the order as cancelled (only available for unpicked orders)Incorrect orders, customer cancellations before shipment, inventory issues
Clean SweepBulk cancels multiple orders and resets them for reimport (preserves order history)Ship option mapping changes, automation rule updates affecting batches

Controlling Order Timing

Controlling Processing Speed

Sometimes you need orders to wait in your dashboard without shipping immediately—maybe you’re coordinating a launch date, waiting for inventory to arrive, or timing shipments for a promotional window. The dummy SKU technique lets you pause orders by adding a placeholder product that puts orders into On-Hold or Exception status. When you’re ready to ship, remove the dummy SKU and orders process normally. Why use this instead of manual holds: Automation rules can add dummy SKUs automatically based on order criteria, making it scalable for large batches. Manual holds require individual order actions. Putting Orders on Hold

What On-Hold status does: Pauses order fulfillment while keeping the order in your dashboard. Orders stay on hold until you manually release them, and you can choose whether to reserve inventory or allow it to be allocated to other orders. Common use cases:
  • Coordinating shipment timing for promotional launches
  • Waiting for additional items to combine shipments
  • Holding orders while verifying customer information
  • Pausing fulfillment during inventory transitions

Understanding Order Flow

How Jetpack’s Order Flow Works

Understanding how orders move through the Jetpack system helps you troubleshoot issues, predict timing, and optimize your automation rules. The order lifecycle:
  1. Order Import - Orders enter the Jetpack dashboard from integrations or manual creation
  2. Auto-Split Rules - Multi-FC inventory may trigger order splitting
  3. Fulfillment Center Assignment - Orders allocate to the optimal FC based on inventory availability
  4. Processing Status - Orders move to Processing and pick within SLA timelines
  5. Shipment Creation - Tracking numbers generate and sync back to your store
  6. Delivery - Carriers deliver to customers
Exception Status: When orders can’t be fulfilled due to insufficient inventory, they enter Exception status and reprocess every 30 minutes. Understanding this cycle helps you time inventory replenishments to clear exception orders quickly. View complete order flow guide →

Packaging and Shipping Optimization

Package Size and Weight Policies

Why packaging matters: Jetpack’s box selection algorithm chooses packaging based on product dimensions, but sometimes the “optimal” box isn’t selected due to item shape, irregular dimensions, or packaging material constraints. Packaging error credits: If you believe your order was packaged incorrectly and you were charged for larger packaging than necessary, you can submit a packaging dispute. Jetpack evaluates disputes based on fit, availability, and dimensional accuracy. What’s not eligible: Custom packaging requirements, preference for different materials, or situations where product dimensions don’t allow for smaller packaging. View packaging policies →

Packaging + Shipping Fragile Items

Fragile handling process: Products marked as fragile receive additional protective materials (brown paper filler, Geami layers) and careful packing. Fragile pack fees apply per unit per shipment. How to mark products as fragile: Configure the “is fragile” setting on each product’s details page. Jetpack’s Operations team receives alerts and applies extra care during fulfillment. Fragile stickers: If you supply fragile stickers, Jetpack can apply them to packages at no charge. You’ll need to ship stickers to fulfillment centers and configure the preference in your dashboard. Troubleshooting and Problem Solving

Troubleshooting On-Hold WROs

What are UROs? Unidentified Receiving Orders (UROs) are shipments that arrive at fulfillment centers without proper WRO identification or with discrepancies that prevent immediate receiving. URO scenarios that create holds:
  • Missing WRO information or tracking
  • Excess inventory (10%+ or 25+ units over expected quantity)
  • Return orders without proper RMA markings
  • Barcode mismatches or missing barcodes
  • Late shipments arriving after 28-day WRO completion window
Resolution process: View on-hold receiving boxes/pallets in your dashboard, verify the shipment belongs to you, and link an existing or create a new WRO to resolve the hold. Inventory processes within 3 business days after linking. View URO troubleshooting guide →

Get Order Updates by Email

Stay informed without constantly checking the dashboard. Subscribe to email notifications for specific orders to receive updates when order status changes, tracking numbers are assigned, or deliveries are completed. How it works: From any order’s Shipment Details page, use the Actions menu to subscribe one or more email addresses. Jetpack sends automatic notifications as the order progresses through fulfillment. When to use it: Monitoring high-priority orders, keeping customers informed with direct updates, or tracking specific shipments that need attention. View email subscription guide →
