Kitting is Jetpack’s service for transforming your inventory before it ships to customers. Whether you need to combine multiple SKUs into ready-to-ship bundles, break down existing kits into components, separate case packs into individual units, or inspect and relabel products, work orders give you the flexibility to prepare inventory exactly how you need it.

Why Kitting Matters

Kitting allows you to create custom product bundles and prepare inventory without handling the physical assembly yourself. Common scenarios include:
  • Product Bundling - Combine multiple SKUs into promotional packages, subscription boxes, or gift sets that ship as one unit
  • Custom Packaging - Assemble items with custom inserts, dividers, or branded packaging materials
  • Inventory Transformation - Convert case-packed inventory into individual sellable units, or transform single units into multi-packs
  • Product Preparation - Add barcodes, stickers, inspection labels, or transfer SKUs between inventory IDs
All kitting work is performed by Jetpack’s Operations team at the fulfillment center you specify, ensuring professional assembly and quality control before products reach your customers.

Work Order Types

Jetpack supports four types of work orders for inventory transformation. Each serves a distinct purpose:

Kitting Work Orders

What It Does

Kitting work orders combine multiple SKUs into one ready-to-ship kit. The end-kitted item becomes a physical product stored at the fulfillment center, ready to fulfill customer orders just like any other SKU in your inventory.

When to Use Kitting

You’ll need to create a kitting order when:
  • Items arrive separately and must be assembled or packaged together
  • Custom boxes require folding of inserts or dividers
  • Custom boxes require more than eight folds
  • A SKU needs a barcode or sticker on individual units
  • A SKU requires an inspection
  • A SKU must be transferred from one inventory ID to another (for example, from a single unit SKU to a case pick SKU)

Supported Kitting Actions

The kitting order form allows you to select from preset actions including:
  • Constructing or closing packaging
  • Placing items in packaging
  • Affixing stickers, labels, or barcodes
  • Removing items or packaging
  • Adding dunnage or constructing box dividers
  • Inspecting items or changing SKU labels
For each action, you can provide detailed instructions and upload photos to ensure the Operations team performs the work to your exact specifications.

De-Kitting Work Orders

What It Does

De-kitting work orders break down products that were previously kitted by Jetpack (using a kitting work order) into their individual component SKUs. This reverses the kitting process, allowing you to sell components separately.

When to Use De-Kitting

De-kitting accommodates your business’s unique needs when:
  • You need to sell kit components individually instead of as a bundle
  • Market demand shifts from bundled to individual products
  • You want to repurpose kit inventory for different product combinations
De-kitting work orders can only break down kits that were previously created using a Jetpack kitting work order. Kits assembled before arrival at the fulfillment center cannot be de-kitted.

Case Breakdown Work Orders

What It Does

Case breakdown work orders instruct Jetpack’s Operations team to remove products from case packaging so individual units (eaches) can be sold and shipped separately. This service transforms bulk case inventory into sellable individual units.

When to Use Case Breakdowns

Case breakdowns are essential when:
  • Your inventory arrives in bulk case packaging
  • Your fulfillment strategy requires shipping individual units to customers
  • You need to convert case packs into eaches without physically handling the inventory yourself
The SKU for the individual unit must exist in your Product Catalog before submitting the case breakdown order.

Important Kitting Considerations

Before creating kitting orders, keep these key factors in mind:

FeesEach kitting order is subject to a flat fee (for training and workstation setup), a picking fee per SKU, and other charges based on preset actions. A breakdown of fees is available in the Billing + Invoicing section.
Inventory RequirementsAll products used in the kit, as well as the end-kitted item, must be synced and marked as active in the Inventory section. The end-kitted item is a physical product that will be stored in the fulfillment center and will incur warehousing fees.
Self-Contained OrdersKitting orders must include all required SKUs, stickers, and packaging in a ready-to-use state. If additional supplies (like zip-lock bags or bubble wrap) are provided, each must be stored as its own inventory ID, incurring separate storage fees and being counted as an individual pick. For standard packaging materials (e.g., brown dunnage paper, geami for fragile items), include a note when placing the kitting order if you prefer using Jetpack’s supplies.
Service Level Agreement (SLA)The kitting SLA for up to 500 kits is available in the Terms and SLAs section. If a kitting order cannot be completed due to unavailable supplies, unclear instructions, or missing components, a 3-business-day extension will be added once the missing information is provided.
Reorder NotificationsTo manage kitting inventory levels, set up reorder notifications to avoid running out of your end-kitted items.
Jetpack cannot accommodate orders for shipping on a plastic pallet, modifying shipping labels, or creating custom labels without an attached PDF of the label. If you have questions about whether your kitting needs can be supported, contact Jetpack Care before creating your order.

Editing and Managing Kitting Orders

Copying and Editing Orders

If you made an error in a kitting order, you must submit a new order by selecting Copy and Edit from the Actions menu on the order’s details page. This duplicates the original order, allowing you to make necessary updates. When editing, you can:
  • Remove unnecessary kitting order actions
  • Add more steps
  • Update existing step actions
  • Add products
SLA Reset: The service level agreement (SLA) will reset based on the submission time of the new order.Do Not Update Fulfillment Center: Updating the fulfillment center during editing will erase your current kitting order data. If you need to change the fulfillment center, create a new kitting order from scratch.

Do Not Copy Old Work Orders

Do not copy an old work order. Each request must be filled out and submitted as a new form to ensure proper processing and WRO creation.
